Paralyzed Dogs Walk Again

Nose Cell Transplant Enables Paralysed Dogs to Walk

Scientists have reversed paralysis in dogs after injecting them with cells grown from the lining of their nose.

The pets had all suffered spinal injuries which prevented them from using their back legs.

The Cambridge University team is cautiously optimistic the technique could eventually have a role in the treatment of human patients [without the use of aborted embryonic stem cells].

The study is the first to test the transplant in "real-life" injuries rather than laboratory animals.

In the study, funded by the Medical Research Council and published in the neurology journal Brain, the dogs had olfactory ensheathing cells from the lining of their nose removed.

These were grown and expanded for several weeks in the laboratory.

Treadmill

Of 34 pet dogs on the proof of concept trial, 23 had the cells transplanted into the injury site – the rest were injected with a neutral fluid.

Many of the dogs that received the transplant showed considerable improvement and were able to walk on a treadmill with the support of a harness.

None of the control group regained use of its back legs.

Olfactory Ensheathing Cells. The only part of the body where nerve fibres continue to grow in adults is the olfactory system. Found in the at the back of the nasal cavity, olfactory ensheathing cells (OEC) surround the receptor neurons that both enable us to smell and convey these signals to the brain. The nerve cells need constant replacement which is promoted by the OECs. For decades scientists have thought OECs might be useful in spinal cord repair. Initial trials using OECs in humans have suggested the procedure is safe.

The research was a collaboration between the MRC's Regenerative Medicine Centre and Cambridge University's Veterinary School.

Professor Robin Franklin, a regeneration biologist at the Wellcome Trust-MRC Stem Cell Institute and report co-author, said: "Our findings are extremely exciting because they show for the first time that transplanting these types of cell into a severely damaged spinal cord can bring about significant improvement.

"We're confident that the technique might be able to restore at least a small amount of movement in human patients with spinal cord injuries but that's a long way from saying they might be able to regain all lost function."

Prof. Franklin said the procedure might be used alongside drug treatments to promote nerve fibre regeneration and bioengineering to substitute damaged neural networks.

The researchers say the transplanted cells regenerated nerve fibres across the damaged region of the spinal cord. This enabled the dogs to regain the use of their back legs and coordinate movement with their front limbs.

The new nerve connections did not occur over the long distances required to connect the brain to the spinal cord. The MRC scientists say in humans this would be vital for spinal injury patients who had lost sexual function and bowel and bladder control.

Prof. Geoffrey Raisman, chair of Neural Regeneration at University College London, who discovered olfactory ensheathing cells in 1985, said: "This is not a cure for spinal cord injury in humans – that could still be a long way off. But this is the most encouraging advance for some years and is a significant step on the road towards it."

He said the clinical benefits were still limited: "This procedure has enabled an injured dog to step with its hind legs, but the much harder range of higher functions lost in spinal cord injury – hand function, bladder function, temperature regulation, for example – are yet more complicated and still a long way away."

Jasper, a 10-year-old dachshund, is one of the dogs which took part in the trial.

His owner, May Hay, told me: "Before the treatment we used to have to wheel Jasper round on a trolley because his back legs were useless. Now he whizzes around the house and garden and is able to keep up with the other dogs. It's wonderful."

Jessie Losing His Vision

Jessie was my father's dog – and now he is part of my family. He's a 12-year-old Portuguese Water Dog cross (???) who has a propensity to chase fast moving outdoor creatures (look out, squirrels!).

But as he is getting older, his vision is getting worse.

He can't always see the treats thrown for him. And he has a hard time recognizing people a short distance away.

It appears his vision is going.

I performed a brief exam, and his has a noticeable whiteness in the center of his eyes.

Cataracts – likely normal aging changes going on with the lens – in veterinary terms called lenticular sclerosis. It's a very common finding with older pets – perhaps you have had a similar experience.

In most cases, it means subtle vision loss, and this is usually more noticed at nights (under lower light).

While I was practicing, I would typically tell clients in this situation to monitor the changes, and not do much at all.

Rapidly forming advanced cataracts are different – they can lead to complete blindness, and they have different causes (e.g., diabetes).

Cataract Options

Fortunately, there are some holistic options, and I am trying some of these on Jessie now.

SUPPLEMENTS. The antioxidants Vitamin E (dose is 100 IU per 10 lbs) and Vitamin C (dose is 100 mg per 10 lbs), plus specific flavonoids, such as Quercetin (dose is 25 mg per 10 lbs) or bilberry (dose is 1 capsule per 10 lbs), may be helpful for cases of allergic eye infections and cataracts.

CINERARIA. Has been effective in reducing the size of some cataracts and decreasing cataract formation. To make a sterile eye solution, purchase sterile saline from a pharmacy. Using the tincture dilute the mixture with 1/2 saline and 1/2 cineraria. Apply one drop twice daily to the affected eye, being careful not to contaminate the eyedropper. This must be used for three months before evaluating its effectiveness.

CHRYSANTHEMUM. This can be found as a Chinese remedy called Ju Hua. It is safe for both dogs and cats. The dose is 1/4 teaspoon per 10 lbs. of the dried herb twice daily. Another Chinese herbal formula called HACHIMIJIOGAN is shown to slow cataract progression.

Dogs Can Smell Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is really hard to detect early. But a new study done in Germany, reported by Gizmodo.com, has found that dogs can be taught to sniff out 71 out of 100 cancer patients. They also were able to pick out 372 out of 400 who did NOT have the disease.

"Not only that, but they could tell the difference between lung cancer and COPD. And it didn’t matter what medications they were on, whether they had recently been smoking, or what they had recently eaten," Gizmodo reports.

Only 15% of lung cancers are currently diagnosed before the disease spreads to other organs. When it's spotted before it spreads, the five-year survival rate is 50%. After it spreads, it's only 2%. But, there's no early detection tool available now. In 2011 so far, 221,130 new cases of lung cancer have been diagnosed, and 156,940 people have died from the disease.

The Marvels of DNA Testing

Through the marvels of DNA testing, some of the greatest mysteries of Mutt-dom are being revealed.

Dogs of vague or unrecognizable ancestry — whether fluffy white mongrels with Chihuahua ears and beagle-like voices or massive hounds that resemble nothing previously seen in nature — are being exposed for what they really are, genetically speaking.

The first test was unveiled not long ago. Now, consumer interest is growing so fast that more companies are jumping into the doggie-identification business, websites are being enhanced, and additional breeds are being added to testing databases.

"Pure curiosity, getting the answer" is the reason most owners seek out the testing, says Neale Fretwell, head geneticist for Mars Veterinary, maker of the Wisdom Panel MX Mixed Breed Analysis. The analysis can can determine which of 134 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club composes a dog's genetic makeup.

And some of the answers are real stunners, not only for the owners but also for the veterinarians who have made their best guesses, Fretwell says.The procedure requires an appointment with a veterinarian to draw a blood sample, and when analysis is completed in two or three weeks, a follow-up visit to discuss the findings. The pricing is set by individual veterinarians, $135 to $170.

Another reason owners go the testing route is to uncover possible explanations for behaviors that might be inherited, such as herding people and other pets or rooting around in chipmunk or mole holes.

Other owners want to know whether their dogs have a high proportion of a breed predisposed to a particular ailment or frailty, although experts caution that it's impossible to know which traits, including propensity for disease or medical problems, a mongrel might inherit from any particular breed.No one offering such tests suggests a mongrel assumes some sort of elevated status upon learning a purebred bloodhound or dachshund entered his ancestry generations ago.

Indeed, the companies celebrate the characteristics of mixed breeds, and some experts applaud "hybrid vigor," the belief that mixing unrelated breeds can create a stronger, healthier dog than purebreds, which can pass on genetic conditions found in specific breeds.

Many clients are "very surprised" upon receiving word of what breeds populate their dog's background, Fretwell says.

Meg Retinger, chief administrative officer of BioPet Vet Lab in Knoxville, Tenn., says: "Some people say, 'That's just exactly what I thought.'" Others "have such preconceived notions about what their pet is, they just won't accept the results."

In January, the lab began marketing its $59.95 DNA Breed Identification kit, which tests for 61 AKC breeds using cheek cells scraped by the owner.

But the signature appearance characteristics of a particular breed don't always materialize, even when there's a high proportion of that breed in a dog, Fretwell says.

A mongrel with a German shepherd parent or grandparent, for example, might not have the black and tan coloring, the saddle pattern on its back or even the long muzzle. Some could not show any shepherd characteristics.

Size, color and a host of physical features such as ear and muzzle shape and tail type are influenced by genetics, and when several breeds meld in one dog, it's tough for even experts to eyeball a mutt and accurately assess what lies within.

Connie Steele of Colorado Springs learned that. This year she adopted a black-and-white dog that shelter personnel thought was mostly border collie and about 1½ years old. She soon discovered from her veterinarian that Ellie was still a puppy, probably less border collie than believed and almost certain to grow a lot more.

Steele had Ellie tested because, she jokes, she wanted "a bit of warning if I'm going to need to plan ahead for a larger house to accommodate a 2-year-old pony-sized dog."

Upon receiving Ellie's results, Steele did not begin house-shopping, though she was surprised by the breeds found in her background. Steele believes the information she now has about Ellie and also Kayla, another recently adopted shelter dog, offers clues about how to approach their training.

Most DNA tests show three or four different breeds in the mixed breeds' ancestries, and many show five or six, experts say. Several more probably are in the mix, but the amounts have been so dissipated over the generations, they are merely weak traces, unlikely to influence a dog's appearance or behavior.

And, yes, a few dogs comprise so many disparate breeds, the experts and their tests just can't solve the puzzle."Even the best test can't answer every question of biology," says Dennis Fantin, chief of operations for MetaMorphix, a company in Beltsville, Md., that has done testing for the AKC for years. The company now offers a $119.95 mixed-breed cheek-swab kit. The Canine Heritage XL Breed Test can detect 108 breeds.

Sometimes, any pure DNA has become "so diluted" by encounters with mixed breeds over the generations that no answers emerge, Fantin says.

Their owners are told the mystery must remain.

Pets: "A Major Source of Carbon Emissions" - Oh, really?

Following on the heels of the climate change summit in Copenhagen, the Agence France-Presse newswire reports that two New Zealand researchers have identified a major source of carbon emissions – our pets. Specifically, the researchers have their eyes on Fido:

Combine the land required to generate its food and a "medium" sized dog has an annual footprint of 0.84 hectares (2.07 acres) – around twice the 0.41 hectares required by a 4x4 driving 10,000 kilometres (6,200 miles) a year, including energy to build the car....

"Owning a dog really is quite an extravagance, mainly because of the carbon footprint of meat," [Stockholm Environment Institute's John] Barrett said.

So what's the solution to "offsetting" these emissions? According the research's authors, one answer is to chow down on our pets. One of the researchers morbidly advises: "Rabbits are good, provided you eat them."

But don't get out the hamster-sized deep fryer just yet. These researchers' calculations rely on the assertion that meat – that is, the animal agriculture process – has an abnormally large carbon footprint. But as we've pointed out when activists like Paul McCartney use climate change arguments to promote a meatless agendas, the EPA's own greenhouse gas inventory shows domestic livestock production accounts for less than 3% of U.S. emissions. Feeding our beloved puppies and kittens isn't as bad for the environment after all.

A French animal rights organization is also objecting to the human elimination of pets, noting the mental and emotional benefits of pet ownership. And while it may not happen very often – sacre bleu! – we're inclined to agree with them. For the environmentally concerned, we can reduce emissions by spreading the use of efficient livestock farming practices. At the very least, that's a whole lot more appetizing than the alternative.
